Beef and Sheep Production and Management



Beef and sheep production and management is the animal care and management, business management, and associated services that are part of a beef and sheep enterprise or related industry.

Pursuing Beef and Sheep Production and Management
Ohio State ATI encourages students entering the study of beef and sheep production and management pursue a college preparatory curriculum and have previous experience or an aptitude for working with animals.

Students seeking an Associate of Applied Science degree in beef and sheep production and management enter directly into the program upon completion of their admission requirements. All applicants are strongly advised to arrange a pre-admission conference in order to acquaint themselves with the various aspects of this major.

General Degree Requirements: The curriculum includes the principles and processes of nutrition, reproduction, genetics, live and carcass evaluation, and health and management of beef or sheep, as well as accounting and farm business.

The beef and sheep production and management program requires that 40 percent of each student's credit hours be earned in the general studies of science, math, communications, and social science. Courses such as written expression, technical reporting, oral communication, technical math, chemistry, biology/animal anatomy and physiology, and social science electives are some of the courses offered in general studies.

Technical instruction includes breeding for livestock improvement, introduction to beef and sheep production, judging, nutrition, livestock disease prevention, and advanced beef production or sheep production. In addition, each student has the opportunity to select 10 credit hours of elective course work.

To obtain the Associate of Applied Science degree in beef and sheep production and management at Ohio State ATI, students must complete a minimum of 103 quarter credit hours with a cumulative point-hour ratio of 2.00 or above. They must satisfactorily complete a prescribed curriculum which includes at least 57 quarter credit hours in technical studies and 46 quarter credit hours in basic and general studies. A minimum of 45 quarter credit hours must be earned through regular course work at the institute, exclusive of an internship.

Practicum is required of students in the beef and sheep production and management program. This is a supervised, practical work experience that provides students with the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom and at Ohio State ATI or the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center beef and sheep facilities. Students are encouraged to think independently and evaluate and solve problems under the guidance of the livestock facilities manager. Students assist in the daily husbandry and responsibilities of the livestock.

Because of their diverse and related interests, many students choose to pursue a dual major during their academic studies at Ohio State ATI. This can serve to broaden professional opportunities and educational experience. Students who decide to follow this curriculum track are urged to work closely with their academic advisors.

Internships
Students in this program complete an industry internship of 10 weeks of full-time employment. Ohio State ATI helps students find appropriate internship positions in both Ohio and other states. Students are paid for their employment, graded on their job performance, and awarded academic credit.

Career Prospects in Beef and Sheep Production and Management
Career opportunities for technical workers in beef and sheep production and management are available in the areas of production, sales, and management. Graduates fill positions such as livestock herdsman, livestock manager, AI technician, livestock buyer, or sales representative. Additional allied industries opportunities are available for work in research and with companies that supply goods and services to livestock producers.

Related Programs
Ohio State ATI also offers an Associate of Science degree in Livestock Science. This degree option allows students to begin their course work toward a Bachelor of Science degree. Students who pursue this degree at Ohio State ATI can meet a portion of the requirements for a bachelors degree at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

In addition, this degree contains the "transfer module," a common set of general education courses which apply to bachelor's degrees at other colleges in Ohio. See "Livestock Science" for the curriculum details of this option.

A Quick Glance At Curriculum
No matter how you slice it, successful livestock production takes more know-how and experience today than ever before. In Ohio State ATI's Beef and Sheep Production and Management program, you'll learn the latest techniques in herd management, feeding and nutrition, and breeding and genetics. Graduates of this program work throughout the livestock industry as herd managers, livestock buyers, and pharmaceutical representatives.

Working with our 85-head cow herd or our flock of 20 registered Corriedale sheep means you beef up your resume while you learn. Calving, branding, and vaccinating: it's all in a day's work for students in this program.
