Environmental Resources Management

Environmental resources management involves finding solutions to today's critical issues of air pollution, water quality, soil erosion, and waste management.

Technicians work mostly in field settings, analyzing pollution problems and applying appropriate conservation practices.

Pursuing Environmental Resources Management
Ohio State ATI recommends that students entering the field of environmental resources management pursue a college preparatory curriculum or have an interest in biology, earth science, mathematics, and physical science.

Students seeking an Associate of Applied Science degree in environmental resources management enter directly into the program upon completion of their admission requirements. All applicants are strongly advised to arrange a pre-admission conference in order to acquaint themselves with the various aspects of this major.

General Degree Requirements: Technical courses include the study of environmental resources, regulated waste management, sediment pollution control and design, and microcomputer and business applications.

This program requires that 45 percent of the credits be earned in the general studies of science, math, communications, humanities, and social science. Developing written expression, oral communication, technical reporting, economics, technical mathematics, social science, world cultures, biology/botany, and chemistry are some of the courses offered in general studies.

To obtain the Associate of Applied Science degree in environmental resources management from Ohio State ATI, students must complete a minimum of 104 quarter credit hours with a cumulative point-hour ratio of 2.00 or above. They must satisfactorily complete a prescribed curriculum, which includes at least 57 quarter credit hours in technical studies and 47 quarter credit hours in basic and general studies. A minimum of 45 quarter credit hours must be earned through regular course work at the institute, exclusive of an internship.

Practicum is a supervised work experience. Environmental resource management students are involved in special conservation and environmental projects on campus, at the Ohio State ATI Farm Laboratory and at soil and water conservation offices. Students complete a minimum of three credit hours of practicum.

Internships
Environmental resources management students complete 10 weeks of full-time employment in their field of study. Ohio State ATI assists students in securing an appropriate internship. Students are paid for their employment, graded on their job performance, and awarded academic credit.

Career Opportunities in Environmental Resources
Graduates receiving an Associate of Applied Science degree can enter the work force in conservation agencies at local, state, and federal levels as well as in those environmentally concerned businesses and industries attempting to solve or prevent environmental problems.
