Nursery Management

The nursery management program prepares students for careers in the operation of nurseries, garden centers, arboretums, botanical gardens, parks, nature preserves, and zoos.

Pursuing Nursery Management
Ohio State ATI recommends that students entering the program of nursery management have completed a college preparatory curriculum. Previous hands-on experience may prove beneficial in pursuing this technology.

Students seeking an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursery management enter directly into the program upon completion of their admission requirements. All applicants are strongly advised to arrange a pre-admission conference in order to acquaint themselves with the various aspects of this technology.

Technical courses include the study of propagation of nursery plants, nursery management, plant identification, soils, irrigation, and drainage, as well as pest management and disease control.

This program requires that over 40 percent of the credits be earned in the general and basic studies of science, math, communications, and social science. Written expression, oral communication, technical reporting, economics, technical math, social science, biology, botany, and chemistry are some of the courses offered in general and basic studies.

To obtain the Associate of Applied Science degree in nursery management, students must complete a minimum of 105 quarter credit hours with a cumulative point-hour ratio of 2.00 or above. Students must satisfactorily complete a prescribed curriculum which includes at least 60 quarter hours in technical studies and 43 quarter credit hours in basic and general studies. A minimum of 45 quarter credit hours must be earned through regular course work at the institute, exclusive of an internship.

Practicum is a supervised work experience that provides training and practice in the skills of identification, care and maintenance of both woody and herbaceous plants. It involves the propagation and growing of ornamental plants in the ATI nursery and at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center's Secrest Arboretum. Special events at ATI and OARDC provide experience in the preparation of horticultural expositions. Practicum also involves equipment operation.

Internships
Students in nursery management complete 15 weeks of internship experience. Internship locations may be clos to a student's home or virtually anywhere in the world. During internship, students are paid for their employment, graded on their job performance, and awarded academic credit.

Career Prospects in Nursery Management
Graduates can enter the work force as technicians or managers in the following areas of responsibility.
  • Nurseries: propagation, plant culture, pest management, inventory control, and supervision
    • Garden Centers: selling, advertising, and merchandising
    • Arboretum and Botanical Gardens: plant culture, management, propagation, education, and research
    • Zoos: horticulturists.

    Related Programs
Ohio State ATI also offers an Associate of Science degree in Horticultural Science. This degree option allows students to begin their course work toward a Bachelor of Science degree. Students who pursue this degree at Ohio State ATI can meet a portion of the requirements for a bachelors degree at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

In addition, this degree contains the transfer module, a common set of general education courses which apply to bachelors degrees at other colleges in Ohio.
