Environmental Resources Science (Transfer Program)

Environmental resources science focuses on solving problems related to wetlands conservation, woodlands and wildlife management, stream protection, air quality, and waste management.

With the Associate of Science degree, environmental resources science majors complete a combination of technical and general courses that allow them to gain hands-on experience while completing 50 percent of the curriculum for a Bachelor of Science degree from the School of Natural Resources at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

This degree also includes the "transfer module," a common set of general education courses which apply to other bachelors degree programs in Ohio.

Pursuing Environmental Resources Science
Students pursuing the Associate of Science degree must complete the following high school curriculum in order to be admitted to the program without conditions:
  • four units of English
  • three units of mathematics
  • two units of natural science
  • two units of social science
  • two units of the same foreign language
  • one unit of visual or performing arts
  • one additional unit from any of the above categories

Applicants to the Associate of Science program in environmental resources science who have not followed this curriculum will have conditions placed on their enrollment. These conditions must be satisfied by earning college credits in the high school subject areas in which the students are deficient.

Students seeking an Associate of Science degree in environmental resources science enter directly into the program upon completion of their admission requirements. All applicants are strongly advised to arrange a pre-admission conference in order to acquaint themselves with the various aspects of the major.

Students must complete a minimum of 95 quarter credit hours of technical and general studies courses, with a cumulative point-hour ratio of 2.00 or above to earn the Associate of Science degree in environmental resources science. A minimum of 45 quarter credit hours must be earned through regular course work at the institute.

Technical courses focus on the science of the environment and include soil science, fertilizers and soil fertility, introduction to environmental science, society and natural resources, irrigation, and drainage and erosion control systems. A minimum of 22 quarter credit hours is required in technical courses.

Environmental resources science students also complete 55 credit hours of general studies, which include communication, social sciences, mathematics, and biological and chemical sciences.

Eighteen credit hours of electives, to be selected with input from the student's advisor, round out the curriculum.

Students in the environmental resources science program do not complete an internship while attending Ohio State ATI. However, similar work experience in the field is strongly recommended.

Career Prospects in Environmental Resources Science
After completing the Associate of Science degree in Environmental Resources Science, many students choose to further their education by pursuing a bachelors degree in environmental science, fisheries and wildlife, forestry and urban forestry, soil science, or human dimensions in natural resources at the Ohio State Columbus campus. Those who graduate with majors in these fields are prepared for careers in water quality management, air pollution control, or land management; with fish and game agencies, educational facilities, or private consulting firms; in woodlands management, wildlife management, or with state or federal forestry agencies; or in tourism, environmental education, or recreation.

Beginning salaries for graduates with bachelor's degrees in natural resources range from $25,000 to $35,000 per year. Salaries vary widely depending on the employer, location, candidates' skills, and previous job-related experience.
