
Construction Science (Transfer Program)
An Associate of Science degree in Construction Science focuses on the technical aspects of estimating, bidding, designing, framing, and finishing while you also learn the business, sales, and service aspects of the construction industry.
When you've completed your two-year Associate of Science degree, you'll have set the foundation for the bachelor's degree in Construction Systems Management at The Ohio State University Columbus campus.
The construction science program helps prepare students for careers in a wide range of construction careers, from commercial, government facilities to residential construction to infrastructure such as highways and airports.
For an Associate of Science degree, construction science majors complete a combination of technical and general courses that allow them to gain hands-on experience while completing 50 percent of the curriculum for a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.
This degree includes the transfer module, a common set of general education courses that applies to other bachelor’s programs in Ohio.
Pursuing Construction Science at Ohio State ATI
Students pursuing an Associate of Science must complete the following high school curriculum in order to be admitted to the program without conditions:
four units of English
three units of mathematics
two units of natural science
two units of social science
two units of foreign language*
one unit of visual or performing arts
one additional unit from any of the above categories
*Students with a deficiency in foreign language are permitted to fulfill the requirement upon transfer to the Columbus campus.
Applicants to the Associate of Science program in construction science who have not followed this curriculum will have conditions placed on their enrollment. These conditions must be satisfied by earning college credits in the high school subject areas in which the students are deficient.
Students seeking an Associate of Science in Construction Science at Ohio State ATI enter directly into the program upon completion of their admission requirements. All applicants are strongly advised to arrange a pre-admission conference with a faculty member in the program in order to acquaint themselves with the various aspects of the major.
General Degree Requirements
Students must complete a minimum of 103 quarter credit hours of technical and general studies courses, with a cumulative point-hour ratio of 2.0 or above to earn an Associate of Science in Construction Science. A minimum of 45 quarter credit hours must be earned through regular course work at the institute.
Technical courses focus on the business and science of construction and include sitework planning and construction, estimating and bidding, building codes, residential electrical and mechanical systems, and Computer Aided Design. A minimum of 40 quarter credit hours is required in technical courses.
Construction science students also complete 63 credit hours of general studies, which include communication, social sciences, mathematics, physics, and chemistry.
Internships and Industry Activities
Students in the construction science program complete an internship of 10 weeks of full-time employment in their field of study. Ohio State ATI helps students find appropriate internship position in Ohio and other states. Students are paid for their employment, graded on their job performance, and awarded academic credit.
The construction program has a strong relationship with local, state, and national homebuilders associations. Students participate annually in the Remodelers Show and the International Builders Conference and Show where the ATI Construction Team was ranked fifth in the nation. Additionally, these organizations provide scholarships to support students in this program.
The Columbus campus’s Construction Systems Management Student Club offers students opportunities to participate in professional and social activities with their peers locally and nationally.
Career Prospects in Construction Science
After completing an Associate of Science in Construction Science, students may continue their studies by completing a bachelor’s degree in construction systems management at the Ohio State Columbus campus. Those who graduate with a major in construction systems management may be employed by contractors and construction supply companies; companies and agencies providing related materials and services; or be self-employed as a contractor, consultant, or owner/operator of a construction business in either the residential, commercial, or heavy highway/infrastructure sectors of the construction industry.
